    Key takeaways

    • Foundry and forge sales are engineering sales. Casting buyers shortlist by process, grade, weight range and machining capability, then by quality paperwork, and only then by price.
    • Find buyers where they leave a trail: shipment data, OEM supplier-development pages, process-specific fairs and the end industries that use castings, such as pumps, valves, auto, rail and earthmoving.
    • Pattern cost, samples and PPAP or FAI make the cycle slow. Say who pays, who owns the tooling and how many weeks to first sample before the buyer has to ask.
    • For iron and steel castings bound for the EU, CBAM is in its definitive phase. Your importer will ask for emissions data, so start recording it now.

Casting buyers do not browse for foundries. They send a drawing to a short list and ask for a grade, a tooling cost and a sample date. This guide shows foundries and forging units in India how to get on that short list in India, Europe and the US, and what the EU’s CBAM rule means for iron and steel exports.

Who are casting buyers, and what do they buy?

Casting buyers are the purchase and supplier-development teams of companies that fit castings and forgings into their own products: pump and valve makers, auto tier-1s, rail, earthmoving and agricultural machinery builders. A second group is sourcing houses and importers who hold drawings and place them with foundries. The two groups buy differently.

An OEM buys for a programme. It sends drawings, expects a development path, and may stay with one foundry for years once the part is approved. A sourcing house buys for a project, wants a quick quote and often needs several processes under one roof. Margins are thinner, but the relationship is easier to start. At home, casting buyers in India cluster near the foundry hubs: pumps around Coimbatore, engines and machine parts around Rajkot, auto and agricultural parts around Kolhapur. Abroad, European buyers tend to work to EN grades and EN 10204 material certificates, while US buyers more often specify ASTM grades on imperial drawings. Steel casting buyers ask hardest about chemistry and heat treatment. Forging parts buyers add grain flow and mechanical properties.

How should a foundry position itself for casting buyers?

Position by process first, then grade, weight range and machining capability. A buyer looking for investment casting exporters wants lost-wax stainless valve bodies, not ‘all types of castings’. Pick the two or three things you do best, state the ranges plainly, and let finished-machined work set you apart from foundries that ship raw castings.

Name grades by standard, for example FG 260, SG 500/7, WCB or CF8M. Give the weight range per piece and annual capacity in tonnes. List your inspection kit: spectrometer, tensile and hardness testing, NDT such as radiography, magnetic particle or dye penetrant, and a CMM for dimensional reports. Say which machining you do in-house. The table shows how buyers read each process.

    ProcessTypical buyersWhat they check

Closed-die forgingAuto tier-1, earthmoving, bearings, railGrain flow, mechanical properties, die cost, traceability, PPAP or FAI
Casting and forging processes, typical buyers and what they check
Do this: Write one capability sheet per process. One page: grades, weight range, annual capacity in tonnes, inspection equipment, in-house machining and three part photos. Attach it to the first reply to every enquiry. One sheet per process beats one brochure for everything.

How do you find casting buyers in India, Europe and the USA?

Look where buyers leave a trail: shipment data, OEM supplier-registration pages and end-industry directories. Start with data. Shipment records show who already imports castings from India, how often and from which port, so you chase companies with proven demand instead of guessing.

Volza and Seair list Indian export shipments by product and buyer. ImportYeti is built on US import records, so it covers the USA only. Castings often sit under the end product’s customs heading (valve parts under 8481, pump parts under 8413, auto parts under 8708), so searching only one casting code misses most of them. Read the buyers importing from your competitors in Rajkot or Coimbatore: they already buy from India. Then open each buyer’s own site for a supplier-registration or supplier-development page. Our post on auto parts importers and OEM buyers covers that route, and pump and valve buyers covers distributors. Demand is real: an Alvarez & Marsal analysis puts the US at roughly 30 percent of India’s casting exports in 2024. Listings on IndiaMART, Thomasnet, Kompass and Europages help buyers who already know your name, but they rarely start the first conversation.

Do trade fairs still bring in casting buyers?

Yes, but pick the fair by who walks the aisles. Some foundry fairs draw equipment suppliers and other foundries, not buyers. Ask the organiser for the visitor profile before you pay for a stand, and weigh fairs for the industries you sell into against fairs for foundries.

IFEX is India’s annual foundry exhibition, run by the Institute of Indian Foundrymen and India Exposition Mart. Ankiros with Turkcast in Istanbul runs every two years. GIFA in Düsseldorf runs only every four years, so plan around its cycle. Fairs for pumps, valves, auto and rail often put you in front of more purchase managers than a foundry fair does. Check dates and exhibitor rules on each organiser’s own site.

What happens between the first drawing and the first order?

A new casting moves through drawing review, a feasibility and DFM check, a pattern or die quotation, samples, a first-article or PPAP submission and a trial lot. The pattern cost and the weeks to first sample are where most enquiries go quiet, so answer both before the buyer asks.

An RFQ usually arrives with a drawing, a material grade, an annual volume and, for auto, a target PPAP level. A strong reply recommends the process (sand, investment or forging), flags draft angles, machining allowance and tolerance risks, and quotes the pattern or tooling, saying who pays and who owns it. Add the lead time to first sample. Auto and heavy-engineering buyers will ask for PPAP, often within an IATF 16949 system; other engineering buyers ask for FAI. Expect a small trial lot first, and expect a programme to take months to ramp.

Pattern cost is where a casting enquiry goes quiet. Tell the buyer who pays, who owns the tooling and how many weeks to first sample in your first reply, before they have to ask.— Murtaza Udaypurwala, DESENO

Does cold email work for casting buyers?

It does when you write to a named purchase or supplier-development manager and make one specific offer. In DESENO’s experience outbound email pays when an order is worth roughly ₹1 lakh or more, and most casting and forging programmes clear that once a pattern and a first batch are counted.

DESENO runs B2B email outreach for manufacturers. We build the list from your ideal customer profile, verify every address before sending, and send from separate warmed-up domains and Google Workspace mailboxes, never your main company domain. That means about a 14-day warm-up, roughly 20 emails per mailbox per day, 2–3 mailboxes per sending domain and a 4–5 email sequence, with replies landing in one inbox your sales team works. In one of our own list builds, only about a third of the scraped decision-maker rows were the right person, so check that each contact holds a purchase, sourcing or supplier-development role. The first email should name your process, grade range, weight range and one photo, then ask for a single drawing to quote. Not every reply is a lead.

Why do capability video and plant photos shorten the audit?

Because casting buyers audit a foundry before they award a programme, and a clear film answers many audit questions in advance. Show the pattern shop, melting, moulding, fettling, the inspection lab and machining, so a buyer abroad can judge your process control before booking a flight.

Film the lab doing a spectrometer check and an NDT test, a pour, a finished batch being packed for sea freight, and the shop floor in daylight. Keep a version for email and a short cut for LinkedIn. Our guide to factory video marketing covers what to shoot and how to use it.

What does CBAM mean for iron and steel castings going to the EU?

It moves a carbon reporting duty onto your EU importer, who will pass questions to you. The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism applies in its definitive regime from 1 January 2026 to iron and steel among other sectors. Importers must be authorised, report embedded emissions and buy certificates.

Check the European Commission’s CBAM page and then your product’s customs code, since coverage is set by the CN codes listed in the regulation, and some castings and forgings are in scope while others are not. Per the Commission’s guidance, importers bringing in below an annual 50-tonne threshold need no authorisation. Where verified emissions data is missing, importers fall back on default values that include a mark-up, so actual data usually serves them better. For you, that means logging melt-shop electricity, fuel and metal charge by batch and product line. A supplier who can hand over clean emissions data is easier to buy from. Confirm the detail with your buyer’s customs broker or counsel.

    The bottom line

Casting buyers choose on process fit, grade, tooling terms and proof of control. Position by process, find buyers through shipment data and supplier portals, choose fairs by visitor profile, write verified emails that ask for a drawing, and show your plant on film. For EU orders, start collecting emissions data now.

    Frequently asked questions

Who are the main casting buyers in India?

Pump and valve makers, auto tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers, rail and earthmoving equipment builders, agricultural machinery makers and engine builders, plus sourcing houses and exporters who place drawings with foundries. Many sit near foundry hubs such as Coimbatore, Rajkot and Kolhapur. Programme buyers want a development path; sourcing houses want a fast quote.

How do I find casting buyers in Europe or the USA?

Start with shipment data from tools such as Volza or Seair to see who already imports castings from India, and ImportYeti for US imports. Add OEM supplier-registration pages, end-industry fairs and verified cold email to named purchase managers. Lead each message with process, grade, weight range and a request for one drawing to quote.

What do casting buyers check before placing an order?

They check process and grade fit, weight range, tolerances, machining capability, inspection equipment, rejection history and certifications such as ISO 9001 or IATF 16949. They then review pattern or tooling terms, sample lead time, and PPAP or FAI readiness. Price comes last for most engineering buyers, once the foundry has passed a technical and audit review.

Who pays for the casting pattern or forging die?

It varies by contract. Often the buyer pays or part-pays the pattern or die cost, either as a one-time charge or spread into the piece price, and the buyer usually owns tooling it has paid for. Agree in writing who pays, who owns it, where it is stored and who maintains it, before cutting any tooling.

Does CBAM apply to castings exported from India to the EU?

It applies to goods in the CN codes the regulation lists, including selected iron and steel products, and some castings and forgings fall inside that list while others do not. The EU importer carries the reporting duty and certificate cost, so expect them to request emissions data. Check your customs code and confirm with your buyer’s customs broker.

What are PPAP and FAI, and does a foundry need them?

PPAP is the Production Part Approval Process, used mainly by auto and heavy-engineering buyers to prove a supplier can make a part consistently at the required quality and rate. FAI, first article inspection, verifies that the first part matches the drawing. Whether you need one or both depends on the customer, so ask at RFQ stage.
